The Washington Park neighborhood is lighting up the streets and hosting its eighth annual food drive for Sunnyside Ministry from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the corner of Doune Street and Cascade Avenue. Activities include carriage rides, singing and refreshments, plus neighborhood homes will be lit up for the occasion. The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods or other nonperishable items for Sunnyside Ministry.
Sunnyside is the local food bank for the Southside community. This year the demand for food is greater than ever because of the increased cost of goods and cutbacks in benefits. Sunnyside provides groceries to families, and 68% of the clients are under age 18. They feed retirees, many trying to get by on less than $800 a month (Social Security + food stamps).
