Western Gateway Enhancements

The Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership is inviting your participation in an important long‑term initiative identified in the 2023 Downtown Winston-Salem Plan: enhancing the western gateway of Fourth Street between Spring and Poplar Streets.
You can view the Downtown Plan at:  https://www.downtownws.com/partnering/downtown-plan/ .  The Western Gateway focus area is highlighted in Section A.6 (page 29).  The Plan calls for the creation of intentional gateway features along Fourth Street from both the east and west. For the western gateway, one potential concept includes the addition of a landscaped median. These ideas are conceptual only—no specific designs have been determined—and we are now beginning the process of gathering input.

Drop-In Input Sessions
We will host two drop‑in sessions on Wednesday, April 8 at:

  • 11:00 AM–1:00 PM
  • 4:30 PM–6:30 PM
Location: Footnotes Coffee and Cocktails, 634 W 4th Street, Suite 120

You may attend at any time during these sessions and stay as long as you like.

Purpose of This Outreach
Our goal is to better understand which gateway improvements are most supported by nearby stakeholders and the broader Winston-Salem community. Potential enhancements may include, but are not limited to:

  • Landscaping and hardscape upgrades
  • Signage
  • Streetscape and infrastructure improvements
  • Pedestrian enhancements
  • Bicycle facilities
  • Murals or sculptures
  • Intersection redesign
  • Other ideas you believe would strengthen the gateway

Your insight is essential as we begin shaping the future of this important entrance to the Fourth Street district. Thank you in advance for your participation and feedback.
